What Is Adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis is a unique condition of the uterus that causes a woman’s endometrial tissue to grow into the muscles of her uterus. This condition often leads to an enlarged uterus, as well as especially painful menstrual cycles and/or pain during sex.

Common Causes of Adenomyosis

There is no known cause for adenomyosis, though many medical professionals believe that the condition may be related to a variety of other health conditions, such as:

  • Inflammation of the uterus
  • Invasive endometrial tissues
  • Localized adenomyoma
  • Abnormal female hormone levels
  • Developmental problems

Risk Factors

It is possible for some women to be more prone to developing adenomyosis than others if they possess one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Are middle aged
  • Have given birth
  • Previously experienced a surgery related to the uterus such as a C-section or myomectomy

How Will I Know If I Have Adenomyosis?

Symptoms of adenomyosis do not always present themselves in patients with the condition. However, the majority of women with adenomyosis will notice several signs, including:

  • Large blood clots during their period
  • Spotting between menstrual cycles
  • Pain during sex
  • Sensitivity in the abdominal area
  • Prolonged menstrual cycles
  • Long lasting menstrual cramps
  • Heavy bleeding during their period
